Siembra 22: LLANO

Tania Ximena, María Sosa, Lorena Ancona.

LLANO presents a group project with recent work by Mexican artists: Lorena Ancona (Quintana Roo, 1981), María Sosa (Michoacán, 1985) and Tania Ximena (Hidalgo, 1985).

“Rythms and Shadows” (2021) by Lorena Ancona is an installation that connects a series of pieces in wood, ceramics and stucco within a landscape where the sound is aquatic and the figures dance far away as in a void. The installation will be part of a series of future pieces that, as fragments, articulate a narrative based on a recent production that alludes to water, sound, the symbology of jade as a representation of luxury and paradise, a game between tools and work, the temperate sound of two colliding stones, a water mirror or the perfume of a flower.

In the seventh fatal omen it is narrated that in the Lake of Texcoco they fished a strange bird, like a crane, whose head was pierced in its middle; The fishermen took her to the temple of the black, where Moctezuma saw the constellation of Mastelejo and horsemen riding antlerless deer in a combat attitude. The work “Séptimo Presagio Funesto, Doble Colonización” (2019) by María Sosa is a sculpture of corn stalk stewed with gold leaf that has a video projected on the head where colonial archive images and news photos of 2019 are related, where the passage of 500 years since the arrival of the colonizers is woven into the nature of the images, which keep a continuous thread of racial, class and sexist subordination as a methodology of continuous and present domination. We can look at the head of the bird that Moctezuma looked at, where he knew that the apocalypse of the world and his civilization was approaching to give way to our daily apocalypse.

Finally, Tania Ximena presents “My mind and the mountain are in a constant state of erosion” (2021), a work that is part of her research carried out since 2015 at the highest point in Mexico (the Pico de Orizaba) and reaching the sea, going through different mental and geographical strata; filming and touring, taking geoform molds, interviewing, suffering from mountain sickness and enjoying the Jamapa River that rises from the melting of the glacier (of the same name) that says goodbye and flows into the Veracruz reef system. A landscape that for her is a set of social, environmental, mythical and emotional strata. This piece is – to quote Robert Smithson – an “abstract geology, a sedimentation of the mind” of a terrain that I have experienced and lived in many layers.
